Astronomy Day at the Montshire
NORWICH, VT—Astronomy Day at the Montshire Museum of Science will be held on Saturday, January 26. Join us for a full day of celestial activities designed to interest and engage visitors of all ages. Among the highlights of this event is the opportunity to meet local astronaut Dr. Jay Buckey. Learn how to identify winter constellations, make a star clock, observe the sun, snowshoe to Saturn, and much more! All activities are included with Museum admission. The schedule is as follows:
10:30 a.m. — Make a Star ClockLearn how to find Polaris. Then build a star clock to bring home and tell time at night.
11:00 a.m. — Meet an AstronautAstronaut Dr. Jay Buckey will speak about his experiences as a NASA payload specialist. In 1998, he flew on the STS-90 Neurolab mission aboard the space shuttle Columbia. He and his crewmates completed 256 orbits of earth and logged 6.3 million miles.
12:30 p.m. — What's Up in Tonight's SkyDiscover the constellations and planets that are visible this time of year through an engaging multimedia presentation in the theater.
1:30 p.m. — Observing the SunThe day's weather will play a role in determining exact activities. Among the possibilities are observing sunspots through a Keplerian telescope, experimenting with shadows, and creating a sundial to take home.
2 p.m. — Life as an AstronomerWhat exactly do astronomers do? What equipment do they use? Meet Andrea Kunder, a graduate student and researcher in astrophysics at Dartmouth College, who will answer these questions and much more.
3 p.m. — What's Up in Tonight's SkyDiscover the constellations and planets that are visible this time of year through an engaging multimedia presentation in the theater.
4 p.m. —Planispheres.Build a map of the night sky to help you navigate the stars in your own backyard.Astronomy Day is free with Museum admission. -30-
