After School Science Adventures
Meets every Tuesday, 3:15-5 p.m., March 18-May 20 (no class April 15).

Museum Preschool
Morning (9:30-11:30 a.m.) and afternoon (1-3 p.m.) sessions meet on Wednesdays. Spring Session: March 19-May 21 (no class April 16).

Homeschoolers Series - Natural Explorations

In this three-part series we'll explore insects, plants and various natural processes such as decomposition and energy cycles. The class includes indoor and outdoor explorations, observation and investigations. We'll use microscopes and other tools to observe our world up-close! Mondays, May 5, 12, and 19. Ages 6-8 meet at 10:30-11:45 a.m. or 2:30-3:45 p.m. Ages 9-12 meet 1-2:15 p.m. Members $40, non-members $45. Pre-registration required.

Encountering Spring Wildflowers

This New England Wild Flower Society workshop provides a great introduction to identifying common native wildflowers. After a short introduction, we'll look for trout lily, wild ginger, blue cohosh, trillium, and other common woodland wildflowers on Montshire property. This introductory program is followed by a longer course Wildflowers of New England beginning May 29 (see below). Meets 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Montshire and NEWFS Members $20; non-members $25. Wildflowers of New England

Join White Mountain National Forest botanist Chris Mattrick as we learn to identify species across the spectrum of New England flora in this New England Wild Flower Society course. We'll get familiar with the family characteristics, growth patterns, habitats, and pollination mechanisms of many native wild flowers. We'll also practice plant identification and study plant habitats in the field. Meets Thursday from 6-9 p.m. Field Sessions: Saturday, May 31, 9 a.m.-12 noon and Sunday, June 8, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Montshire and NEWFS Members $130; non-members $150. New Resident Open House

Using Plants in the Wild

This hands-on exploration is designed for teens and adults who'd like to learn more about plants Native Americans used for their daily living. What the Ice Age Brought to the Upper Valley

We'll ride by van with Dick Birnie, Dartmouth professor of earth sciences, to observe remnants of the glaciers that covered our area with a mile-thick ice sheet 18,000 years ago. Along the way we will study the layered sediments of Glacial Lake Hitchcock that once flooded the Upper Valley. It's a geological journey back in time, with a knowledgeable and enthusiastic guide! 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Fee: Members $100, non-members $110. Register online.

Survey of New England Ferns

This course is geared to people with some experience with ferns who want to gain knowledge of the whole group in this region. Unraveling Dryopteris: the Wood Ferns Workshop

Participants will learn how to distinguish nine species of wood ferns native to New England, and understand their tendency to hybridize. We will identify seven species and several hybrids in the field at Hobbs Fern Sanctuary, a rich environment and biodiversity of ferns and fern allies. 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Co-sponsored by the New England Wild Flower Society. A Pocketful of Wonders

Master storyteller and musician Odds Bodkin will perform this family concert Friday evening at 6 p.m. A Pocketful of Wonders includes music on a plethora of instruments; stories and parables from around the world; and an incredible rock-and-roll finale called The Electric Three Little Pigs. $10 general admission, $8 for Montshire members. Nature at Night

The night is alive! A Montshire sticker will be your family's ticket to a special evening adventure. Inside the Museum we'll learn about constellations visible in the night sky this fall and find out about the nighttime activities of native mammals. The wonder continues outside on a night walk where we'll use all our senses to observe nature at its most mysterious. Free with Museum admission. 6-9 p.m.

Native New England Shrubs

The many species of native New England shrubs display a wide variation in size, shape, and color. This course, instructed by Chris Mattrick, will introduce students to about fifty species growing in this region. Choose one of 3 sections: Wednesdays, Sept. 10 and 24, 6-9 p.m.; Saturday, Sept. 13, 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m.; or Sunday, Sept. 21, 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m. All sessions meet at the Museum.
